Professor Andrew Lowe is recognised for his sustained and translational research excellence in biomedical engineering and cardiovascular health. His work focuses on developing innovative, non-invasive medical devices that improve the accuracy, accessibility, and equity of health care, particularly in home and primary care settings. Over more than two decades, his research has led to internationally recognised technologies, multiple patents, and successful commercialisation, alongside significant competitive funding and industry collaboration. His research leadership has influenced international standards, supported Māori and Pacific health equity initiatives, and strengthened AUT’s impact in health technology innovation.
Dr Gautam Anand, received a MedTech Translator Collaboration and Ideation RAP I Award (May 2026) for his project, "Multimodal Physiological Sensing for Dementia Monitoring: Feasibility, Co-design and Translation." This recognition reflects Gautam's dedication to advancing innovative digital health research and translating impactful ideas into meaningful healthcare solutions.
Prof. Ahmed Al-Jumaily has been honoured with the ASME Dedicated Service Award, a prestigious international recognition of his ten year plus outstanding leadership and voluntary commitment to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, which will be presented at IMECE2026 in Vancouver.
Prof Dr M. Iqbal Choudhary, a recipient of the prestigious Mustafa (PBUH) Prize, Distinguished National Meritorious Professor at the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Science and Coordinator General COMSTECH, is among the most prominent scientists of Pakistan recognised for his original contributions in the fields of natural products and bioorganic chemistry. Prof Choudhary visited Prof Ahmed Al-Jumaily and his team at IBTec on 19 January 2026.
During his visit, IBTec students and staff presented their ongoing research, and potential research collaboration was discussed.

AUT's Institute of Biomedical Technologies was honored to welcome Hon. Dr Shane Reti, Minister for Pacific Peoples, Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology, Minister of Statistics and Minister for Universities, who helped launch the new AUT Innovation Fund. We appreciated Dr Reti's keen interest in our research on technologies that can enable more effective healthcare.

Professor Andrew Lowe from the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences secured $1 million under the Smart Ideas programme, an investment mechanism intended to catalyse and rapidly test promising, innovative ideas with high potential to benefit New Zealand.
Professor Lowe’s research aims to develop a new method to accurately measure blood flow in intensive care patients to reduce the risk of amputation or death resulting from low blood flow to the limbs.
“The funding gives us a wonderful opportunity to work on a very promising approach to improve the management of poor blood flow to the legs and arms. This research builds on technology projects previously funded by MBIE, as well as the deep clinical and physiology expertise of our interdisciplinary, multi-organisation team,” says Professor Lowe.

IBTec researchers Andrew Lowe and Anubha Kalra, together with collaborators Gautam Anand and Ray Simpkin, have been granted a US patent relating to the measurement of electrical potentials from the human body. Their innovative work helps to reduce the impact of changes in the interface between electrodes and the body.

Congratulations to Dr Anubha Kalra who has been promoted to the position of senior lecturer.
Anubha has been an integral part of IBTec since 2014 and is currently a core research staff member, with a focus on cardiovascular disease management and medical devices . This news marks a significant milestone in Anubha’s academic career, which began as a lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering within AUT's School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences in 2020.

Pressure Oscillation in Biomedical Diagnostics and Therapy presents key findings in imaging, diagnostics, and therapies using high and low frequency pressure waves in a concise and easy-to-understand way, focusing primarily on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems that utilise acoustics (mechanical wave motion).

RespirAq, an AUT tech spinout, has recently been granted breakthrough device designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Active Humidifier product.
